Mayonnaise JarWhen things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 Beers.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.

When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full.

They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.

The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full.

They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.

Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

He asked once more if the jar was full.

The students responded with a unanimous 'yes.'

The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand.

2 CansThe students laughed..

'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.

The golf balls are the important things---your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.

The sand is everything else---the small stuff.

'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.'

The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Spend time with your children.

Spend time with your parents.

Visit with grandparents.

Take time to get medical checkups.

Take your spouse out to dinner.

Play another 18.

There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.

Golf Balls in a JarTake care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter.

The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented.

The professor smiled and said, 'I'm glad you asked.'

The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of Beers with a friend.

Please share this with someone you care about. I JUST DID!

Is it best to use the color black in creating the home page. . or is it alright to use gold or purple for the search engines?

Is it better to make a lot of uppercase words?

When making a site 'sticky' does that apply for the most part to the Home Page?

Let me answer your second question first about using all UPPERCASE words.

If you are going to use all uppercase words, do it in extreme moderation. All uppercase words looks like shouting to most people, and in my opinion the search algorithms tend to categorize all uppercase words as shouting too. What I am saying, is the engineers at Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft Search are always tweaking the algorithms to get the best search results possible. They don't want search results pages that look like they are shouting at people either. Now, that doesn't mean that the search results pages are not going to pick up any (all uppercase) pages in the search results, it is just a guideline to think about when you are designing your website and performing SEO Best Practices.

Try to use good writing techniques in all your published writing on the Web. I am of a strong opinion, that the search algorithms are actually being engineered to analyze writing styles, proper writing syntax, and text semantics. If you write and publish on your website using good sentence structures, then the search algorithms will tend to give your website higher marks. It's just like a writing rubric grading system at school, but this grading system is truly color blind to unjust prejudice.

Don't fret if you are not a literary genius, or have a tendency to misspell words, or have other dyslexic writing tendencies. Use web browsers that have automatic spell checkers, like Firefox, or write using Microsoft Word or equivalent word processors, and have these programs do automatic spell checks and syntax checks for you. If you want additional writing help, there are automatic programs such as WhiteSmoke that will help analyze, proofread, spell check, and edit your text to make it much more palatable to your visitors and the search engines too. The WhiteSmoke writing program has various writing modules available for help with general, business, creative, Hi-Tech, Bio-Tech, and executive writing styles. In addition, it is wise to have others check your published works. Don't take constructive criticism personally, and continue learning from mistakes. The best way to improve your writing skills is with practice; there is no other way.

What color should I make the home page for the search engines?

I'm convinced that color schemes in the website pages are not so much as an important factor for the search engines, as it is for your readers, and people that are likely to link to your website in the future. It you have body text, that is not hidden in the page, the search engines can read it regardless of what color your page is. An important point here is, don't make your body text hidden by doing some form of Blackhat SEO tactics. The search engine algorithms are getting much more sophisticated, and will likely give your website a search ranking penalty if you use Blackhat SEO tactics. You however do need to make the page easy to read for your online readers. Typically white on black is harder to read than dark on light colors. Once again this is just a guideline. I have used both at various times. If I have a lot to say, and I expect my readers to be able to spend a lot of time on the website, then I would make the pages as easy to read as possible. If I have a little bit to say, and I want to use a little bit more creative license in my web designs, then experiment with other color schemes.

For example: My Backflag site that I use for Internet shorts, is light on dark backgrounds which in my opinion is harder to read. On the other hand, my According to Jim site is mostly dark on light backgrounds, for easier in-depth reading. See Marketing-101 for an overview.

Now, if you look closely, you will see that I actually use both, dark on light, and light on dark backgrounds, at www.jimwarholic.com. The header area is a dark background and the body is a light background.

Does making a site "sticky" apply, for the most part, to the Home Page?

The term "sticky" generally refers to the ability of a website to capture the attention of a reader in order to draw that reader back to your website, and the ability to empower your reader to interact with the site by having them explore the website pages and read more content. How well you do this through out the website will determine how sticky your website is. Different types of websites have different degrees of stickiness. As far as how sticky your Home Page should be is concerned, it all depends on what you intend to do with the site in the first place. In my opinion, the Home Page should be an overview guide about your website. If someone comes to your website the first time through the Home Page, and you have very little information, they will have no idea what it really is about.

The example you gave, about the "Company of Winners" books is an example of an overview Home Page. This one is a graphic, which generally speaking, an all graphic home page is not the best from a search engine optimization perspective to be search engine friendly, but it does however show the point I am trying to make about the home page being an overview guide.

Hope that helps you.

Best regards,

Jim

Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got.
Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.

Wouldn't you like to get away?

Sometimes you want to go

Where everybody knows your name,
and they're always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows
Your name.

You wanna go where people know,
people are all the same,
You wanna go where everybody knows
your name.

Listen to the Full Lyrics with the link below.

Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you've got;
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away?

All those night when you've got no lights,
The check is in the mail;
And your little angel
Hung the cat up by it's tail;
And your third fiance didn't show;

Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came;
You want to be where you can see,
Our troubles are all the same;
You want to be where everybody knows your name.

Roll out of bed, Mr. Coffee's dead;
The morning's looking bright;
And your shrink ran off to Europe,
And didn't even write;
And your husband wants to be a girl;

Be glad there's one place in the world
Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came;
You want to go where people know,
People are all the same;
You want to go where everybody knows your name.

Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came;
Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came...

Well, after a number of Internet years, I thought Fridays needed a new online face lift. I hope you like the new TGIF wildlife adventure view. All I can say is TGI Fridays today.

Kick Back, Take Off Your Shoes, Enjoy Our Orange Sunset With Your Tequila Sunrise at My TGI Fridays

So, after searching the Internet high and low, north and south, east and west, leaving no online stone unturned (well, maybe a few) I came upon a cool Web graphic from Final Sense that I thought would work in a new blog website. I really like some of the images that Final Sense uses on their free Blogger templates. They provide cool templates for Classic Blogger (Blogspot) and also the new XML Blogger templates. Final Sense had this beautiful kick back and relax, old-fashion classic Duma adventure yarn wildlife view, that I thought would be perfect for the new Fridays. However, I was looking for a little bit of a wider template to use, and since I could not find one already pre-made for Blogger Classic, I decided to customize an open source website template to be able to use it for Blogger.

By-the-way, I do like the new XML Blogger Templates, but Blogger Classic is still a really cool way to go if you are using your own website domain and hosting the website on your own server. You can use .html, .htm, .php, .asp, and other file types when publishing to your own server through FTP. Yes, I know there are other blogging platforms such as WordPress, which I also use at our Creative Marketing website, but as I have said in the past, one size does not fit all, and there are some pretty cool things you can do with Blogger and hosting a website yourself. Actually both Blogger and WordPress are powerful marketing platforms, fun to use, and are fully customizable. There are pros and cons to both WordPress and Blogger which have been well documented by others, so don't take me to the woodshed today... Ok?

Getting back to my TGI Fridays wildlife story, since I loved the Duma graphic so much, I also took the liberty of customizing the original artwork from Final Sense, expanding the landscape and sizing the graphic image to be able to use it for the header section of this template (see above). First off, here is where you can see and download the original Duma Blogger Classic version with the graphic image used in their template. Note, sometimes Final Sense website seems to get a lot of online traffic and you might have a difficult time getting there at times.

Now, for the website template strategy. As the old saying goes, "If you don't at first succeed, try and try again" is certainly the truth when it comes to website ideas and working on new creations. I tried a couple of different website templates to begin with, and finally settled on the perfect one. However, settling on the perfect template was just the start, it still required more customization.

As consumers and businesses are using the Web in greater numbers and have made new computer purchases in recent months and years, it has become apparent that many of the old CRT monitors are being thrown out for more energy efficient LCD monitors. Screen sizes have become wider as a norm for most people today. And, with that being said, I wanted to expand the landscape for our new TGI Fridays website template. OK folks, here is the scoop. You can try to reinvent the wheel or customize a wheel that already exists. If you want to create a wheel from scratch, you can spend a lot of time and creative energy that could be better utilized in other areas. So, I took a visit to the open source template areas online. Click the link to read more about some of the open source website designs. I found the Orange Sunset by decarter design, to be quite beautiful and easy to customize it every way that was required.

What I did with the website design is made it wider. That required adjusting some of the website graphics to stretch them out from a 780 pixel width to have the images work in a 1024 pixel width website template instead. It also required extensive modifications of all the division sizes and tweaking time. Yes, for lack of a better word, there is a fair amount of tweaking time that goes into all website creations. No one gets it perfect the first time through.

Now that I had the template graphics customized to size, and the cascading style sheets (CSS) of the template customized for DIV sizes, colors, and added features, and the header image customized, the blog template now required adding the Blogger Code to certain areas of the website template. Note, any website template can be made into a blog; it just takes a little time and a good understanding of how the Classic Blogger Template Tags are laid out. Once these tags were included in the website design, it magically then became a blog design. With the key template tags added, the Blogger software now knows where to place the postings, comments, and various other sections such as archives, previous postings, and Blogger identity profiles.

Once that was done, then it was time to republish the whole blog. I should point out that I used a test blog before doing anything live on Fridays. Anyone can create a test blog on Blogger for this purpose quickly and easily. That way, if you make a mistake in the test blog area, you will not harm your precious main blog site. Believe me when I tell you it is precious. You get attached to what you have done. It is better to be safe than sorry. Sorry for all the cliches, but trust me on this main point.

The work is never over. Never let it go stale. This is my Internet Continuum Theory in operation today. And, this is our Internet Business Solution for marketing and advertising your business today.

Please don't send us emails asking us if we found a cell phone behind the counter, or found a wallet on the floor at the local T.G.I. Friday's® Restaurant in your community. The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.

When I'm feeling down, I like to whistle. It makes the neighbor's dog run to the end of his chain and gag himself.

The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight, because by then your body and your fat have gotten to be really good friends.

The easiest way to find something lost around the house is to buy a replacement.

Trust Me!

Did you ever notice:
The Roman Numerals for forty (40) are ' XL.'

The sole purpose of a child's middle name is so he can tell when he's really in trouble.

There's always a lot to be thankful for if you take time to look for it. For example I am sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt.

Did you ever notice:
When you put the 2 words 'The' and 'IRS' together it spells 'Theirs.'

Aging: Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it.

Birds of a feather flock together and crap on your car.

Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to youth, think of Algebra.

Ah, being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable.

Long ago when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft.
Today, it's called golf.

Lord,
Keep your arm around my shoulder and your hand over my mouth..AMEN..!!

Wrong email address.
A lesson to be learned from typing the wrong email address!!!!

A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier.

Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules.

So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday, with his wife flying down the following day.

The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email to his wife.

However, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address, and without realizing his error, sent the email.

Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband's funeral.

He was a minister who was called home to glory following a heart attack.

The widow decided to check her email expecting messages from relatives and friends.

After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted.

The widow's son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife
Subject: I've Arrived Right On Time
Date: October 16, 2005

I know you're surprised to hear from me.

They have computers and the Internet here now and you are allowed to send emails to your loved ones.

I've just arrived and have been checked in.
I've seen that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow.
Looking forward to seeing you then!!!!
Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was.
P.S. It sure is freaking hot down here!!!!

G Marketing Your CompanyYou may not have noticed it, but a while back Google changed their Fav Icon from an uppercase "G" to a lower case "g". The Google Favorite Browser Icon is what is displayed in the tab area and the front of the address area of a browser like Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari when browsing to a Google Branded website. I know there was an official response as to why Google changed and updated their Favorite Icon, but I have my branding thoughts too. Read more about the New Google Favicon.

This Fav Icon story segues into understanding your business website and online branding too.

Google is Your Website Home Page

Most people in the business world don't have a clue that their home page of their website is not really their home page at all. The home page of a website is Google.

Ferrari Hot Marketing
First off, Gmail is Ferrari Hot! And let me tell everyone up front that by having a Gmail account has made my life much easier, increased my productivity, helped me to be more organized, and faster on the road. One of the aspects about dealing with numerous customers in both B2B and B2C industries are in many cases the requirements to have an email address with the domain name I am working with at the time.

As a business representative for our clients, I need to sometimes make contact with various client related business interests, and having a email address with that customer's domain name is advantageous for representing the company to the third party. However, with so many email addresses to check on a regular basis, it becomes difficult to stay on top of all the communications items. This is where the Gmail email system comes in handy big time. What I do is forward my emails from all my other accounts into a central Gmail address location. This way, I don't have to go in and check my emails at all my other email addresses. But, you say, "I can forward my emails to any location that I want." Yes you may be able to do that, but Gmail offers a feature that also allows you to respond as though it is coming from the other email address. You can also send emails through POP SMTP from another email account or using the IMAP function, import old emails from other accounts and synchronize all emails with Outlook or other email programs running on multiple computers at the same time. Here are some of the various mail clients along with the instructions on how to configure them for Gmail. Sign up for a free Gmail account.

Google Apps and Gmail For Any Business

Take the next step for your business organization with Google. Use the Gmail interface software engine via Google Apps for your domain name. One of the features that Google Apps has for any company is to use Google's Email servers to handle your daily email requirements for your company. There are two levels of service provided by Google. One is the free and provides over 7 GB (and counting) of email storage for each email account. The other is $50 per user per year and provides 25 GB of email storage for each account. Both the standard free edition and the paid premier edition come with full administrator control panels for a central IT person or even a non IT person to set up new accounts and control access to established accounts. Just like in the Gmail accounts online, users can access their accounts through the online control panel, IMAP, and POP SMTP email client settings.

I am convinced that Google Security for your Emails are better than any security at any company. Read the past article on Cloud Computing The Google Way to understand the reasoning behind my statement that Google is more secure than even your company. I know that may come as a very bold statement to some, but I encourage you to read the article and think about the economy of scale and understanding of their security measures in place, along with independent security audits that are conducted regularly.

The Gmail Email Overview

Gmail offers entire organizations and businesses personalized email addresses like jsmith@yourdomain.com. Gmail comes with helpful features to make email more useful, like award-winning spam and virus filtering, up to 25 GB of storage per account, powerful search to find messages as fast as you can search the web, and instant messaging built right in. The Gmail web application is accessible from anywhere, and you can even sign in from your mobile phone. Or if you prefer, you can access email from your favorite mail client like Outlook or Thunderbird using POP or IMAP at no additional cost.

Why switch to Gmail Google Apps for your domain name? There are many reasons to do it, but two of the top reasons in my book would be that the storage capacity is simply enormous, and you never have to throw any emails away. Remember, most companies are using their website servers also as their email servers. This means they are limited by how much data they can store online in the email portion before things have to get purged. Most companies provide their employees with significantly less email storage area, and what happens many times is their email boxes fill up and need to be emptied to make room for new emails. Other times, a main IT person or administrator is constantly going into the email accounts and purging past emails to make room for more. Whereas with Google Gmail Apps, users have a huge storage area which are unlikely to get filled up except by the super power huge file receivers of email information, and even then, I imagine that Google would just add more capacity for specific power hungry email users.

By-the-way, I am talking from first hand experience on both the free Gmail email available to anyone online and Google Apps for a domain name, with a private label email address using the Gmail email software to drive it. Using the Gmail Google Apps is like driving a Ferrari very very fast. And you know what? Others wish they had one too. Maybe someday.

This is important for your business today, especially as the world is becoming much more of an online commercial sphere for businesses, engineers, buyers, and consumers.

Summary of the main points of commercial email marketing are:
  1. No misleading subject header information.
  2. Must be identified as advertisements.
  3. Must include a valid physical postal address for the sender.
  4. Must include a conspicuous notice of a recipient's opportunity to decline further commercial messages from the sender and must remain valid for at least 30 days after a message is sent.
  5. Opt-out requests must be honored within 10 business days. However, affirmative consent may be obtained to resume the sending of emails to recipients who previously opted out.
